your hot takes in bly manor are honestly making my day SO: jamie and dani being direct parallels to peter and rebecca (peter and jamie both with abusive/tragic childhoods, rebecca and dani both being au pairs and falling for them).....let's discuss

Okay. I’ve been sitting on this since it came in, parsing it out, because it’s suuuuch a choice. Such a good solid, sometimes subtle choice to place these two love stories end to end. To have Peter and Jamie both come from low-income, low-class beginnings with shitty parents, and to watch them grow into such different adults. Peter, trying constantly to game the system, to pull himself up. Jamie, who has been through not only trauma, but also the therapy that was necessary after the fact, throwing herself as far into the opposite of the system as she can. Down to the way they dress: Peter trying to look upper class and rich in his suits, Jamie slouching around in whatever is functional and comfortable, not caring the least if there’s dirt on her face. They hold themselves as complete opposites, and they scorn each other’s way of existing in the world. Peter because Jamie looks like the help. Jamie because Peter acts like a controlling asshole.

So these women come into their lives, these women who are so similar on the surface. Both good with children, both nurturing, both smarter than anyone wants to give them credit for by looking. Both want to make a difference in the world: Rebecca wants to be a lawyer, and Dani just...wants to make some kind of impact. Both have been boxed in by society’s expectations. Pretty young women aren’t expected to be anything deeper. They both are running from that, and that leads them both to this house and this family.

Peter, now, Peter doesn’t do family. Peter’s home life sucked. Peter isn’t here to make friends, he’s here to climb the ladder. Peter wants nothing more than to be of Henry’s class, and is so resentful of being viewed as lesser. And that bitterness shapes his interactions with the family of Bly. He’s charming and fake and constantly throwing barbs at Hannah—and repeats it with Rebecca—about how they’re just the help. They’re not family. They don’t get to have that.

Jamie? This IS Jamie’s family. She’s scrappy and she’s rough around the edges and she’ll threaten to throttle a child, but she loves them. She loves these people, and she does have her own separate home, as Peter does, but she spends so much time with them all the same. Dinners and fixing things around the house that aren’t necessarily the gardener’s problem. And she’s been there for the kids’ performances, even if she rolls her eyes every time. She teases Owen and Hannah, she knows them, she lets them know her. No one is surprised when she and Dani fall in love. There are no awkward “what’s this gay shit” looks between Owen and Hannah about it. Just like Jamie clearly sees the chemistry between them, like you do when you love people and want them happy.

So Peter meets Rebecca and she’s...not a means to an end, exactly. She won’t help him climb. I do believe he loves her, in his own way. But it’s manipulative from the start. Point out the stain on her blouse, an instant flaw. Here, have some flowers—but I’ll give them to the child while looking at you. Pretend to be so nice and so good with kids, but as a show to make her interested. And even their first night together, he just...is lurking outside her door. We’re meant to think he’s a bump in the night, a scary ghost, until she opens the door.

Contrast with Jamie and Dani. Dani is instantly such a part of the family for Jamie that she doesn’t even think to introduce herself. You’re here, and I’m here, and why weren’t you here all along? Feels like you were. She teases Dani from the start: about being crap at making tea, about being American, about silly little things, but the first time she sees Dani in distress? She goes to her. She instantly tells her she’s doing well. And before that, she gives a glimpse of her own self: “I cry all the time.” Here is my vulnerability. I see yours, I give some back. Their first night together isn’t quick and it isn’t dirty and it isn’t even easily won. They’re slow. Glances. A brush of hands. Jamie staying over in the house to be close, like Peter does, but not going to Dani; she just sleeps on the couch alone. And there are conversations. Conversations about how Dani needs to take care of herself. About how Dani has felt pain and loss. And when Dani throws herself into a kiss, Jamie instantly asks if she’s sure. Consent all the way down, setting the stage for their whole life.

And even when they do go on that date, and Jamie does share so much of herself, and they do go to bed together—Dani wants her to stay. Instantly. “You could come back.” And Jamie gently, lovingly, says, “There will be other nights.” Contrast again with Peter grabbing Rebecca by the wrist. Dragging her back with physical restraint. Forcing her to stay. Jamie leaves for the night, with the promise that she will be back, and when she does stay: it’s forever. It’s on equal terms. I’m back, and I’m here, if you want me. If you want the company. You get to decide, too.

Peter? Peter tries to sweep Rebecca away. Quite literally. Tries to hide away with her in the forbidden wing. Tries to wrap her in upper class clothing he has no rights to. Tries to memorialize her in photos, keeping her stagnant, keeping her with him in a way that promotes no growth. He decides for the both of them how they will be: when he can be kind, when he can abuse her for innocuous actions, when he will sweep back into her life and pretend it never happened. He doesn’t invite her to America; he says he’s got a plan. He makes it sound grand and exciting, but never tells her he’s going to make her an accomplice to theft. And when he dies, he intentionally haunts her—hides her away in her own memories—lies to her to make sure he won’t be alone. Kills her, because it’s better than never having her at all. He takes all that potential and reduces it to a moment’s decision without her consent. And leaves her to feel it alone.

Jamie...Jamie is all about growth. Jamie is all about organic forward momentum. Giving Dani space to say no, to breathe, to choose. Giving her options. Maybe we can go on this adventure together. Vermont, maybe—but doesn’t have to be. I just want to be with you, in whatever way makes you happy. They make a plan together. And they don’t hide away from anything. She certainly will never leave Dani to feel pain alone. She actively, intentionally says, “I will feel everything for both of us.” I will never let you carry this alone. You are here. Stay with me, please. Not by holding too tight or twisting the narrative, but just with the simple love of someone who wants to be with their person forever.

And of course that’s why the way Dani leaves hurts, and why it’s necessary. She knows Jamie too well. Jamie would want to be dragged down with her, if it meant not being alone. If Peter would kill to stave off loneliness, Jamie would die for it. And Dani can’t have that.

This is long, I’m sorry, but one more thing: it’s not lost on me that Peter’s preservation of Rebecca is a static photograph and Jamie’s is a story. Stories have a way of taking on lives of their own. Of growing and changing details with every retelling. Of being organic beasts in their own right. A photo stays the exact same forever, until it fades away. A story? A good story breathes.

i loved it!!!!! (slight spoilers ahead.) parts of it felt a bit americanised (to appeal to a wider audience, maybe?), but, like, without the worst things that usually come with that, if that makes sense? (if you’re from Outside of north america, you’ll defintitely Know what i mean, akjhfksa.) i liked that the plastics/meanies of this school were essentially characters that could’ve been taken straight outta some american teen show, akjfs, with their hair always done up and those elaborate outfits. (their performative #wokeness was such a nice touch, too, lmaooo.) i LOVED the locations, because when you think “a british show” you usually think THE NORTH, whether it’s a northern city, or a countryside that comes with a specific cold colour palette + flora, and this place had /almost/ like… a mediterranean feel to it. i’d assumed it’s the south, but then discovered they mostly filmed in wales, which, HOW COOL!!!!! a part of the uk you don’t typically see, like i said. loved the premise, loved its execution, and the whole show in general was just that perfect balance of humour+serious that brits just excel at, tbh. i loved the plot twists regarding the characters/their families, and that the creators avoided making it all black and white (like IT HAPPENS IN LIFE, gasp). how jackson’s parents maybe weren’t what you’d excpected, and that he ended up genuinely liking some of the stuff he was getting involved with just to win over maeve’s heart, that meave’s brother wasn’t just an asshole, and they had a genuine connection, that if whatever happens between maeve and otis in the future, it’ll feel EARNED, and we weren’t just sold this unrealistic romance from the start. what else… the performances were honestly all great, i loved pretty much all of main and secondary characters, i don’t think i even have a fave, i was just genuinely loving all of those kids. gillian is sooo great in her role, too, desperately trying to navigate that line between a therapist and a mother and just constantly crossing those boundaries she shouldn’t be crossing, but you Get why it’s do difficult for her. loved her relationship with otis. loved so many scenes!!! for example… like, the abortion episode was great, and the bitch was crying during the school dance and the origin of love and /everything/ that happened later in that episode. AND “IT’S MY VAGINA” MADE ME EMO, TOO (and this entire ep/storyline/maeve’s Reasons for getting involved), OF COURSE. QUIETLY POWERFUL. A BITCH TEARED UP.

honestly i think i was initially the most wary of… eric? because creating a secondary-ish black character that’s mostly a comic relief in this day and age didn’t feel that Great at the beginning (even if he’s gay in this story), but they later fleshed out the character in a way that made my reservations go away pretty much completely. it’ll be so interesting to see how they handle him+adam, because relationships that start with bullying are suuuuch a difficult topic to navigate/execute, but i think i Trust them to get it right???

idk i just really enjoyed it all!!!!! it had a HEART, however lame it may sound. can’t wait for more.

“Now,” began the interviewer. “You have had one of the most successful DCEU movies, how does it feel to hold this spot over any Batman movie?”

You sighed a bit and sat up straighter, straightening your jacket. “Feels good doesn’t it?” You looked around the room, laughing when everyone else did. “I’m just kidding,” you straightened up again, but leaned back against the chair. “Well, being cast as a younger Hawkgirl was definitely a major dream come true. I think we were just really lucky that that fandom accepted me so well, especially with the large number of superhero movies coming out now. And with Ciara already playing her on The Flash, I think it’s great that people don’t mind the divide between the tv shows and the movies.”

The interviewer nodded, “I agree, the fandom is strong here and you adapted the character very, very well. Would you mind Tyler becoming Batman after Ben steps down?”

“Thank you,” you smiled.”And definitely not -- he’s gorgeous. I would die every time I came on set!”

She laughed, “Sounds like tough work.”

“Filming in Ibiza is suuuuch a pain,” you dramatically sighed and slumped backward.

She laughed and then put her note card behind another, her signal for a new question. “Now, I’m sure you’ve heard about what happened with Dylan O’Brien. The whole switching from DC to Marvel at the last minute, what’s your opinion on that?”

You raised your eyebrows a bit, but continued, “Yeah -- I think it’s a “good for him” type of situation.” You shook your head, “He took the opportunity that was best for him and I definitely commend him for making a decision like that, yeah.”

“Are you a fan of Marvel, Y/N?” She smiled mischievously, but you kept a straight face.

“Sure,” you smiled, fakely. “Sebastian Stan is a real hero of mine,” you winked and threw a thumbs up. She laughed and you started laughing, too. “I knew this was going to happen!” You yelled it, but continued to laugh, hoping to not offend the interviewer.

“I’m sorry!” she yelled, making an exasperated motion with her hands. “This is my job!”

You continued laughing, “It’s alright. I get it.”

“SO!” She started, “What’s Tom Holland like?”

“He’s great,” you sighed. “He’s amazing. I honestly cannot put into words how great he is.”

“Well, I interviewed him yesterday,” she began. “And he had a lot to say about you.” She pulled an iPad from beside her and started playing a video.

“She’s fucking amazing,” he laughed. “She’s everything I could have imagined a person to be like. It’s quite funny because when my parents met her, they were like ‘This is a Romeo and Juliet romance.’ Which I didn’t understand until I remembered that I’m Marvel and she’s DC.”

“So you’re confirming that you’re dating?” Asked the interviewer.

Tom laughed and he started rubbing his arm, his cheeks were turning pink. “Where’s the fun in honesty?”

“Honesty is the best policy, Tom.” She started laughing, too.

You could see Tom look off to the side, probably getting direction from his publicist. He started nodding slowly, “Yeah,” he said. A huge grin spread across his face.

“We knew it!” said the interviewer. “You guys are so cute together -- how could we not ship you guys?”

He started laughing again, “I’ve got a shit-eating grin on my face, don’t I?”

“It’s the smile of someone who has access to DCEU secrets!”

“Nah,” he said, “She probably has some MCU secrets, though. I’ve got a big mouth…”

“He gives himself too much credit,” you say, “He hasn’t told me anything worth spilling.” You and the interviewer laugh together. “But yeah, we’re dating.”

“And how does it feel to be in a ‘Romeo and Juliet relationship?’”

“Feels scandalous, doesn’t it?”

The fan shakily spoke into the mic, “How do you guys feel about Romeo?”

The crowd burst into laughter and Ezra and Jason looked at each other, trying to figure out what was happening.

Henry leaned closer to the mic to answer, “I think, that as long as the fandoms don’t start fighting, that things will be good between them.”

Jason and Ezra both nodded along, finally understanding what was being talked about. Ezra said, “I agree. You don’t choose who you fall in love with.”

The crowd cheered and whooped at that and Ezra started waving them off jokingly.

“So you’re not concerned that Y/N will switch over to the MCU?” The fan asked.

“Of course not,” said Ray. “Y/N has a contract -- DCEU has got her for at least 4 more years.”

Everyone at the panel laughed.

You continued to watch from the sidelines, smiling at your soon-to-be castmates.

“However,” spoke Ezra again, “We will kick Tom’s little spidey ass if he decides to break Y/N’s heart.” He looked off to the side, at you, and threw you a dramatic wink as the entire room shook with the audience’s wild applause and cheers. You laughed and flicked Ezra off before clapping along with everyone else.
